BJJ MUNDIALS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Readers, If you are reading this post right now, you’re a fool!  You could be watching the IBJJF Worlds instead.  They’re being broadcast LIVE from Long Beach for FREE. I just watched a guy named “Cobrinha” finish with an omoplata — apparently in the Mundial tournament, no matches are allowed to end with points.  You know what that means?!? SUBMISSIONS!!! ...

Thursday class
Mild knee injury.  Seems to be an mcl sprain/tear.  Hopefully I’m good by next Tuesday (!?#%4^%$wtf!) No Warm-up Technique: Countering the escape from kesa-gatame with a whizzer.  Brabo choke from here.   Takedown practice. Roll: 4 x 5min. ___ Good roll with bigger guy - stayed in good position and kept good posture. Got choked twice — once from guard and once from my back.  Had...

Tuesday class: "I did that once"
Warm-up Technique Judo : a simple inside foot sweep while retreating; enter and inside leg-wrap when uke defends foot sweep. Butterfly guard: basic sweep; straight arm-lock series. Roll: 4 x 5 min ___ Judo is HARD. I’m thinking of enrolling for a few months at a judo dojo b/c my shit stinks. I think that would have to help?! Very frustrating rolls. I rolled with some newer...

Thursday class
Warm up Technique: Judo - harai goshi (I think?) — practice entering and loading, and finally throwing.   Kesa gatame escapes (3) : sliding hips out, sliding head out, chasing opponent’s back. Kesa gatame brabo choke; brabo choke escape. Roll: king of the mountain (15 minutes); 2 x 5 min. ___ I am really starting to like judo training — still have a long way to go! ...

Tuesday class: defense
Warm up Technique: single leg takedown defense; side control escape; kesa gatame - survival and escape Roll: 4 x 5 min good roll. I tried some closed guard stuff from my JJU book: swinging leg way out in triangle; flower sweep improvements; sleeve choke. Didn’t do so well v. bigger guys. Have to work on paying attention to opportunities, and moving quickly.

Thursday class
Good class.  Lots of judo = exhausting. Warm-up Technique:  Judo Side control to scarf-hold position: transition; scarf-hold Americana; scarf-hold straight-arm lock; scarf-hold to arm-bar Roll: 25 minutes - all standup ___ Scarf-hold techniques were cool and a good alternative from side-control, with lots of submissions.  We did about 25 minutes of judo.  Rotating in: get thrown (back...

Tuesday Class: Armbar
Warm-up Technique: Arm bar from the guard; arm bar from the mount. Roll: 4x5 minutes __ Simple enough! Armbar form the guard, armbar form the mount.  Except spending an entire class on this really helped a beginner like me get some of the more subtle points of this technique. 1) from the guard — using the close leg to pinch in against opponent’s arm; using opposite heel to break...

Thursday Class: judo
A judo throw and some side control work. Warm-up Technique: 1) judo throw where you step in front of uke, wrap your arm under his arm, load him on your hip and rotate. (Have to learn the name here!) 2) side control — escape from straight arm lock using your knee; Roll: 4 x 5 minutes. __ Uneventful.  Can’t remember much since I’m writing so late.  No injuries. I think I...

Tuesday Class: Americana from side control
Good class.  A couple of really strong new students (wrestlers?). Re-injured toe on left foot. Warm-ups Technique warm-up: Guard pass and regain. Technique: American from side control, when opponent puts his arm across your throat.  For straight-arm defense of Americana — switch grip to straight arm-lock. Roll: 4 x 5min, switching partners __ Re-injured my previously broken toe.  Not...

Tuesday class
First class of the quarter! It was a good break — two weeks — but it was too long.  It felt good to get on the mat again. Warm-ups Technique: Judo. Unfortunately I don’t know the name of the throw — I really gotta learn the names of some Judo throws, but the Japanese names sound so strange at first.  Anyway, we did one where you step between uke’s legs, wrap your...

Submission #679 - Most Points In a BJJ Match -... →
ivan-usdailysports: At the European Festival Of Martial Arts, Samuel Monin not only got the fastest submission I have ever caught on tape, but he also scored the most points i have ever seen in a BJJ match (before he finally gets a submission). For your reference, the previous highest score I had ever seen in a BJJ match was 33-0 in a purple belt match between Jacob Mclintock (a really...

Thursday class: triangle
Triangle choke from different spots. Warm-up Technique: 1) From guard : try hip sweep - if opponent posts arm, fall back to triangle. 2) Triangle from guard with overhook - opponent tries to pass to weak side, push his passing arm up to a crucifix, fall back to triangle. 2) Triangle from spider-guard when opponent posts knee in your crotch (sweep post leg) 3) Triangle from...

Tuesday class
Basic technique on butterfly guard. Warm-ups Technique warm-up: from the guard — armbar, triangle, gi choke (and escapes), sweep. Technique: butterfly guard 1) sweep to mount 2) gi choke 3) choke (defended), sweep to mount Roll: king of the mountain, from the knees __ The class was fun because of the roll at the end.  I got tapped first really quickly by the blue belt in our...

Thursday class: omoplata
A little late, but here it is: Warm-ups Technique: 1) setup: Break posture down from the guard (pull collar, grab back of neck; get an overhook on opponent’s arm and grab gi);  Hip out to side of overhook - allow pass to other side - push opponent’s arm through guard and apply triangle. 2) omoplata: Opponent blocks triangle by locking arms under your hips - push off...

Thursday Class: open guard
Good class. Warm-ups Technique: 1) Open guard:  just putting your opponent in basic open guard (feet on hips, gripping sleeves, partner standing); transition to spider, hip, butterfly.  Always one foot at a time with transitions - keep tension between sleeves, feet. 2) Sweeps from open guard: a) partner (standing) passes spider guard — sweep with a grip on his ankle and remaining leg in...

Tuesday Class: skipped
I did not train today.  I went for to a rolling session on Sunday, and left my arm in an armbar slightly too long.  Should be fine, just a little sore still. I’ll lift tomorrow, and back to class on Thursday. I’ve been watching tournament videos all night.  I really miss practice already.  I just want to be safe with this thing.

Thursday Class
Last night’s class was brutal. Warm-ups Technique warm-up: any sweep from guard; partner regain guard from mount. Technique: Chokes (forearm across throat, rear naked choke, and gi choke) Roll: king of the mountain type 3 vs. 1 (20 min); also 2 x 5 min __ Rolling was fun enough. However, The guy that I was working out with was cranking his forearm into my throat during chokes —...

Tuesday Class
Great class tonight. Warm ups (run, push-ups sit-ups and rolls) Our new warmup drill (from the guard): arm-bar & escape; triangle & escape; choke & escape; sweep to mount (and recover guard); switch. Technique: sweeps from the half-guard.  (A 3 technique progression - sweep grabbing the foot; escape to rear; sweep to other side after uke pins arm) Roll: 3 x 5 min. (starting from...

President's Day workout
At my University, we only have BJJ class 2x per week.  (Actually, right now, that’s plenty for me, since the intensity level is so HIGH!) Consequently, I have to exercise on my own the other days. Today, I did the following improvised work out: 10 x walk hands out, push-up, walk hands back to standing 10 second backwards neck-bridge (to engage the anterior chain) 50 meter sprint (all...

Aikido to BJJ DVD with Derek Nakagawa & Marcio... →
I have trained aikido for 6-7 years.  I haven’t been doing BJJ long enough to know if it has really helped me at all. There are some similar techniques, though. In Aikido, we do hip throws similar to the judo throws in BJJ.  We do shoulder compromising locks (shihonage), and basically standing americanas.  We also do standing kimuras. Many Aikido techniques end with uke submitting...

First Post
As it says in the ABOUT, I am starting this blog as a journal for myself of my BJJ experience.  I started training in January, so I’ve been to about 6 classes so far.  Here is my background story: 1) I trained aikido for 6 years before starting BJJ. 2) I didn’t really want to do BJJ, but they have a cheap class at my University, and my wife thought it would be a good “couples...
